In 1999 Geoinformation Research Center together
with the experts of Russian Geographic Society and the Faculty of
Geography and Geoecology of St.-Petersburg State University
started working on drawing up of popular Complex Historic and
Geographical Atlas of St.-Petersburg. On the conception of the
authors of the atlas, this edition should represent the
cartographic encyclopedia of St.-Petersburg, where the basic
aspects of the city's past and present will be presented together
with detailed maps of all administrative areas. The edition of
the Complex Historic and Geographical Atlas is timed for the
celebration of the 300 anniversary of St.-Petersburg in spring of
2003.
The first and the largest thematic section of the Complex
Historic and Geographical Atlas is " The Atlas of the
Historical Heritage of Saint-Petersburg". The maps of the
atlas graphically reflect the state of St.-Petersburg in
different stages of its development, the most important
historical events and monuments within the territory of the city.
This atlas includes 22 geographical maps, grouped in three units.
The first unit reflects the major stages of S.-Peterburg`s
development on the basis of the reproduction of the historical
plans of the city. All the plans are accompanied by historical
information and lists-indexes of the objects, marked on the plan.
For the readers' convenience the contours of the modern buildings
are shown over historical buildings in the areas, where they have
changed. The second unit contains the map of the monuments and
places, assosiated with the outstanding historical figures and
events, and also the map of the archaeological monuments. The
third unit contains the maps of the most important historical
events, that have taken place in Petrograd-Leningrad.
